my SFF is poorly. the stomach is bloated although the scales are not sticking out. He has only had a couple of nibbles of his normal food, and a couple of bites of a prawn we put in. The tank is approx 55l, lives with neon tetras, one gold gourami, a black shark, a small plec, and two platys. Any idea what may be wrong with him? any suggestions that we could do to cure him or make him more comfortable if no cure? please help asap as i am very upset at the state of my poor fish. Thanks helen x

So sorry to hear about your betta. I have flame tetras that I have noticed look bloated or fatter in the tummy, I think it is from over feeding though. So of course I think maybe you are overfeeding and thus he is not hungry anymore whenever you feed. I am not sure what you should do i just thought i would tell you that.

I used to have my 10 gallon setup with a male betta, 1 or 2 female bettas, and a chinese algae eater. I would usually feed once every 2 days, sometimes even only once or twice a week. The tank did great. The bettas lived for over a year, and even breeded on their own. 3 generations of bettas lived in that tank without me even trying.

Is the water clean? How do you do water changes?

IIRC, bettas like a neutral PH, while a lot of this fish you mentioned often live in more acidic water. Perhaps the PH is a little low for the betta?
