Has annyone had any experience in keeping this species in an aquarium?I know from experience when angling They are such a colourful fish and they are also active predators that will devour anything smaller than them selves but apart from taking water samples from the local lakes i have caught them from I have no other information on there requirements in captivity.

Very active predator. I too used to fish for them as they fight as well.

As to keeping them, I recall an article in Practical Fishkeeping many years ago, it was essentially a freshwater tank, with the decor similar to the local canal, wheels, cans, etc!

They seem to live in a variety of habitats, including rivers, ponds, and canals, so I'd guess they are tolerant of temperature and water quality.

Be interested to hear how you get on.

Have you had any luck in your quest? Keen angler here too and I am trying hard to find any material on keeping British coarse species. I once kept a perch (about 2oz size) that I caught from the Grand Union Canal when I lived down near Aylesbury. I clearly did lots wrong as it quickly lost its bright green and black stripes (probably stress) and it was continuously hungry so I think they are voracious eaters and the diet of bloodworms, daphnia and maggots I gave it wasnt sufficient. Rather than let it suffer I returned it to the canal in the hope that it would fare better in its natural environment.
